BACTERIOSTATIC WATER · 10 mL · 3 mL  available

Bacteriostatic Water (BAC Water)

Bacteriostatic water (BAC water) is water that contains a bacteriostatic preservative — most commonly 0.9% benzyl alcohol — which inhibits bacterial growth so a multi-dose vial can be accessed more than once. In the lab, it’s used as a diluent for reconstituting lyophilized compounds.

Quanta Nova BAC water is made in Garland, Texas with Type 1 ultrapure water and 0.9% benzyl alcohol, in 3 mL and 10 mL vial packs with wholesale options. Every batch has an independently verifiable report for pH and benzyl alcohol content.

What is bacteriostatic water?

Bacteriostatic water, commonly shortened to BAC water, is water that contains an added antimicrobial preservative, most commonly 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The preservative is bacteriostatic: it slows or stops bacterial growth rather than killing bacteria outright.

Because of that preservative, BAC water is supplied in multiple-dose vials that can be entered more than once, while preservative-free water is intended for single use. It is also different from bacteriostatic sodium chloride, which contains 0.9% sodium chloride in addition to the preservative.

Quanta Nova BAC water is supplied for laboratory research use only.

Frequently asked questions

8 questions

Storage & refrigeration

Does BAC water (bacteriostatic water) need to be refrigerated?

No. Store Quanta Nova BAC water at 20–25°C (68–77°F). Refrigeration is not required and does not extend the printed expiration date or the 28-day limit after first access. If you mix BAC water with another material, follow that material’s storage instructions; they may differ.

Shelf life & expiration

How long does BAC water (bacteriostatic water) last?

Unopened: Quanta Nova BAC water has a stated shelf life of two years from manufacture when stored as directed. Follow the printed expiration date.

After first access: After the first puncture, discard within 28 days or by the printed expiration date, whichever comes first. Record the first-access date; accessing the vial again does not restart the 28 days.

Can you use BAC water after it expires?

No. Do not use Quanta Nova BAC water past its printed expiration date or more than 28 days after first access, whichever comes first. Refrigeration does not extend either limit. Read more: How Long Does Bacteriostatic Water Last?

BAC water basics

What pH is bacteriostatic water?

The USP standard for bacteriostatic water sets a pH range of 4.5 to 7.0. Quanta Nova BAC water is pH-adjusted to fall within that range. For more on composition, see our bacteriostatic water guide.

What does BAC water stand for?

BAC water is short for bacteriostatic water: water containing a preservative that inhibits bacterial growth. Quanta Nova BAC water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol. Read more: What Is Bacteriostatic Water?

What is the difference between bacteriostatic water and sterile water?

The main difference is the preservative. Quanta Nova BAC water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol; Sterile Water for Injection contains no antimicrobial preservative. They are not automatically interchangeable. For laboratory research, follow the material’s instructions when choosing a solvent.

What is bacteriostatic water used for in laboratory research?

BAC water can be used as a diluent to dissolve or dilute compatible research materials. The correct solvent depends on the material and the research protocol. Follow the material’s instructions; BAC water is not suitable for every peptide or experiment. Quanta Nova BAC water is for laboratory research only.

Is reconstitution solution the same as bacteriostatic water?

Not necessarily. “Reconstitution solution” describes what a solution is used for, rather than a single formula. A product with that name may be BAC water or a different formulation. Check its ingredients, preservative concentration and the research material’s instructions before treating the solutions as interchangeable.

Is BAC water the same as bacteriostatic sodium chloride?

No. Bacteriostatic sodium chloride (bacteriostatic saline) contains 0.9% sodium chloride plus a preservative. Quanta Nova BAC water is water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol and contains no sodium chloride. Check the label to confirm which product you have.

Buying & batch testing

Where can I buy bacteriostatic water?

You can buy Quanta Nova BAC water directly from this website in a 4-pack of 10 mL vials, an 8-pack of 3 mL vials, an 8-pack of 10 mL vials, and a 248-vial wholesale option. Compare vial size, pack quantity, and current prices above to choose what fits your laboratory’s needs.

Where can I see and verify the BAC water test report?

View the current batch report in the COA section on this page. Open the full report to see the tests and results it documents. Select the Vanguard verification link to open the laboratory’s record in a new tab and compare the report number, batch details and results. You can also find reports on our COA Reports page.

Should I choose 3 mL or 10 mL vials?

Both contain the same 0.9% benzyl alcohol formula. Because each vial has a 28-day limit after first access, 3 mL vials suit laboratory work that uses smaller volumes, so less is left unused; 10 mL vials suit larger volumes. Shop the 3 mL 8-Pack · Shop 10 mL packs

Do you offer bulk or private-label BAC water?

Yes. Our 248-vial case of 10 mL vials is available labeled or unlabeled for wholesale and private-label buyers. Sold for laboratory research use only; private-label buyers are responsible for compliant labeling. View the 248-vial case or email support@quantuminnovationlabs.com.
